Flora & Ulysses
Built in 2019, Flora & Ulysses is a vibrant 22-unit coliving community on two abutting residential lots just off the NE 42nd Ave. mainstreet in the Cully neighborhood. And yes, the name is inspired by Kate DiCamillo’s awesome young adult novel.
This small community is a creative experiment in providing market rate, affordable, community-oriented housing options on standard 50’x100′ residential lots. Each mirror-image L-shaped buliding contains an 8 bedroom home with large shared kitchen & living room and a 3 bedroom ADU with smaller shared kitchen. Most bedrooms have internal bathrooms; a few have shared hallway bathrooms and rent for less
Outside, a shared courtyard provides garden & social space anchored by a mature cedar tree and buffered from the street by a stand of fir trees. Covered second floor decks on each side open out to the central courtyard and provide direct exterior access to some of the upstairs bedrooms.
The property is entirely electric, with a mix of ductless and ducted heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and induction ranges. First floors showcase artistically stained concrete floors. Stair risers have chalkboard paint for ever-changing chalk art and salvaged wood treads. Upstairs bedrooms rooms feature cork flooring and tall, vaulted ceilings.
